----------------------------------------------- Who am I ? My work, my motivations -----------------------------------------------

I am a graphic designer. I made my studies at the ESRA Nice, a school divided into 3 sections: Cinema, computer graphics and sound. Having failed the entry drawing contest of the school, I nevertheless proved my qualities and desire in the field of computer graphics and my interest in traditional cinema. Therefore I was accepted in the cinema section with the possibility of following on the side the courses of the Supinfograph (computer graphics) for the first year. On that basis, I very quickly wove links with the students of the other sections of the school and in particular with those of the cinema section with whom I collaborated later, once I had passed in Supinfograh section for my second and third year.

The result of my various collaborations can be seen in the digital graphics section of this website.

If CG (computer graphics) is an art which has suddenly prevailed, not to say cannibalised, most of visual media, it actually represents only the surface of things. It’s the paper we use to wrap our gifts to highlight the surprise. Unfortunately, today, it seems that much of the computer effects we see in movies become the gift, the surface is now the surprise and once we open the gift their is nothing inside, or so little... This is why if CG art makes me dream and wonder each time, I don’t forget that it has to be justified. It must have a reason to be, other than itself.  This is why everytime I’m working on a project, I choose those that fully justify the use of it and go right to the goal, serving a speech, a matter, an idea, but never in a way of hiding the misery of an industry to the service of its own existence.

It’s also the reason why I am interested in many other subjects than CG and entertainment.

When I was young and someone came with that question: "What do you want to do later in your life", I tended to answer : « volcanologist ». You may think the gap between volcanology and CG is wide …. from my point of view and as far as i am concerned, not that much. ... Volcanos are among the most imposing demonstrations and the strongest visually and emotionaly speaking expressions of activity on earth. The science and the reality of the world in which we live and which is ruled by a certain number of laws, governing our evolution since millenia, astonish me every time. I was fascinated by the programs presented by Haroun Tazieff or by the couple Katia and Maurice Kraft, famous geologists and volcanologists. What moved me away from this path was that the final result of all this work wouldn't have had much effects on our daylife. It is also the distance from the ground, from nature and the fact that this work usually leeds to offices and laboratories that quickly made me lose my interest in those studies. Anyway, i kept my passion for volcanology and all kind of natural and scientific phenomenon.

Finally it made me stay on the surface since i now work on trying to create the same visual and emotional feelings through computers and digital effects. But on the side, I still keep my foot to the ground by trying to understand the world we live in, the comprehension of what we are, the way the world goes, the problems of our society and of the social consequences, that are as many subjects of first importance. They explain the existence of media and the need to informe, to communicate but also to divert us. Thus the fights which are carried out each day by those who, pushed in their last frontier, do not have any other means to express themselves, challenge me.

I like photo-reporter for their capacity to capture the magical moment, the one where all the aspects of a question are joined together to reveal the reality of a situation.

I like documentaries for the will of analysis, explanation and argumentation of subjects which in final always return to that same question : who are we ?

Because they are at the same time the twin brothers of the media entertainment on the form, but opposed in the content and the engagement of their creators.

Between the dream in front of an illusion and the nightmare in front of the rough reality, there are those who make possible their diffusions and their comprehensions. I am, or rather I would like to be in between, knowing that it is by the domestication of these two oppositions that one advances. Surface without content is not interesting, and if it is true it catches the eyes at first glance, it does not give us anything concrete and in final causes disinterest. On the contrary, content on itself has so much to give us that it can sometimes be frightening and make its acceptance very difficult. Then it becomes impossible to share. It will be simply rejected because we are not ready, as spectators to call ourself into question. Of these two extremes, between futility and gravity, exists a fine border. It is it which guides my choices and my work. Like a sinner, between the juicy maggot which will attract a fish and the cruel reality of the hook hidden below. I am from those fishermen who will release the fish, hoping he will have learned from its experiment and that the next time, maybe, he won’t bite to the hook anymore...

This ambivalence is often formulated under a question which one hears frequently asked to the directors, documentarists, photographers but also to all the artists who use their art in an engaged and militant way : "Do you think your work can change the spectators, the opinion... the world?". Some will answer "Yes", others "No", and some others won’t have any opinion because they do simply what they think is right to do according to the "chance" they have to be able to express themselves in front of an audience, hoping without believing too much. The answer is at the same time Yes and No.

YES, because it’s an element that allows us, men and women to know and understand. Yes because it is the proof that we won’t be able to deny and say : "I did not know" when the time as come to look back in the past. Yes finally, because if the work which one carries out is sufficiently meaningfull then it can give the desire and energy necessary for others to grow, to build themselves, and possibly then to become those futur actors of the transformation of the world.

NO, because society is in a perfect inertia. It would be like splitting an ocean with a sword, the ocean will not move but the sword will immediately be covered at once. To believe that a film, a documentary or a photo can change a situation or change people and citizens mind like magic is from my point of view a pure illusion. Very often, the success of a project is the proof that the message contained in it already existed in the spectators minds, and that they only needed to be confirmed in their belief. The success is explained not because there is a horse to draw the spectators, but very often because it is the plough the spectators are ready to highlight. Without, and that beats everything, changing anything from our choices of existences and relationship to others.

As an end it’s a question of what role we want to play, which as far as I am concerned, is to believe and make people believe that tomorrow shall be a better day… without forgetting that it is by knowing and understanding from the past, and from the present that we can build our futur.

It is mainly by learning from reality that our dreams can be concretized, and the existence of the second is only possible because there is a first one to exceed.
